Derek McCormick’s Violin Blog

Making a violin and other violin-related topics

This violin is being made for Conor Caldwell, a talented young traditional fiddler.   He is currently an MA student at Queen’s University Belfast.  In the last few years he has played extensively around Ireland and the USA both solo, and with different ensembles and he has “guested” with some of the greats of traditional music today, including Mairead NiMhaonaigh, Harry Bradley, and Liz Carroll. He is also a musician for the famous Loughgiel Folk Dancers and has been part of their world champion dancing groups for the last three years.

Conor says; “I first played one of Derek’s violins when I auditioned for Music College in 2005 and found the Guarneri model to be most sympathetic to my style of playing. Having been a pupil of Derek’s daughter in St Malachy’s College, Belfast, I was always aware of the quality of his instruments, and I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on the new model in the coming months”.
